What is a Generator?
An electric generator is a machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Thus Generator is an electric energy generating machine which works on the principle of induction.
Basic Principles of Generator
The generator mainly works on Faraday's principle.
According to Faraday's principle,
'If a conductor is rotated in a magnetic field, then an electromotive force is induced or produced in it and if the circuit is complete then current starts to flow.'
What is a generator?, its working principle and how many types are there?
Key points to generate electric power from generator
In this way, three main things are required to generate electric power-
1- Magnetic field
2- driver
3- Mechanical force to move the conductor in the magnetic field
Generator Type
There are mainly two types of generators-
1- AC Generator
2- DC Generator
1- AC Generator
AC generator is a machine that converts mechanical energy into alternating electrical (AC) energy. AC generator is also called alternator.
2- DC Generator
DC generator is a machine that converts mechanical energy into DC electrical energy, but the point to be noted here is that DC can never be generated. And in DC generator also AC current is generated which is converted into DC current by the commutator.
